In the international trade, the transportation process of dangerous goods is rigorous and complex, especially the containerized shipment, which involves the cargo of multiple owners sharing one cabin, and the safety and compliance requirements are relatively strict. Any omission in any link may result in the cargo being detained, fined or even the whole ship rejected. To achieve safe and compliant shipment, the following key links shall be focused by the enterprise.
1、 Precise interpretation of MSDS
MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) is the "ID Card" and "Manual" for the transportation of hazardous materials. It is not a simple certificate, but a comprehensive document detailing the chemical composition, physical and chemical properties, hazards, safe operation guidelines and emergency measures.
Shipper needs to ensure that the MSDS content provided is accurate, complete and complies with the regulatory requirements of the place of receipt and dispatch. The carrier will strictly review the sea/transport rule information in the MSDS to initially determine whether the cargo is classified as hazardous and the hazard classification. This is the cornerstone of all subsequent operations.

2、 Obtain UN number correctly
Once the MSDS review has been passed, the next step is to determine the unique "International Identification Number" - the UN number for the hazardous material. This is a four-digit code that represents a specific hazardous substance or article. For example, UN1263 refers to "paint".
UN number directly determines the packing category and stowage isolation requirements required for subsequent transportation. Enterprises shall accurately classify according to the exact chemical composition and physical form of the product and the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Regulations. Improper classification will directly lead to wrong packaging and transportation mode, and bring safety hazards.
3、 Standardize the use of dangerous package certificate
Dangerous Goods Package Certificate ", i.e. Identification Results Sheet for the Use of Outbound Transportation Package for Dangerous Goods, is an official document to prove that your dangerous goods have been packed in containers conforming to international standards and that legal packaging performance inspection has been completed.
At the time of booking, the shipping company will request the original copy of the dangerous parcel certificate. This document declares to the parties that the hazardous material has been properly packaged to withstand the usual risks of sea transportation. This is the necessary pass for the cargo to enter the ship smoothly.

4、 Declaration of Dangerous Goods
An accurate declaration of dangerous goods must be submitted to the carrier prior to port closure. This document shall clearly indicate the correct shipping name, UN number, hazard category, packing category and quantity of the goods.
Each item of declaration information must be completely consistent with MSDS, dangerous package certificate and actual condition of goods. Any discrepancy, such as a general name or an incorrect UN number, will result in Customs inspection and delay in shipment.
The containerized transportation of dangerous goods is a systematic project linked with each other. Each step is based on solid professional knowledge and rigorous working attitude, from providing accurate MSDS, to classifying correct UN number, to handling the compliant dangerous package certificate, and finally completing the truthful declaration. For shipping companies, working closely with an experienced and professional freight forwarder team is an effective way to ensure safe, compliant, and on-time arrival.
